JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian human rights worker was detained by Israeli police in Silwan on Monday, the director of the Wad Hilwa Information Center said.
Jawad Siyam said Mahmoud Qara'in was detained near his office, and Israeli police were deployed heavily at the entrance of Silwan inspecting residents as they entered or leave.
Ma'an's reporter said Israeli police also searched several homes across the neighborhood.
A spokesman for Israel's National Police did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
A settler's car was also set alight in the Wad Hilwa area, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
The heavy deployment in the flashpoint neighborhood follows the shooting death of two Palestinians by an Israeli settler guard on Wednesday and ensuing unrest as Palestinians rallied against the killings.
A day after, a local family said their young child died of tear-gas inhalation.
