Nablus: The Business of Occupation
An old soap factory, a modern olive oil plant and two import-export agents struggle to do business in Nablus under the Israeli occupation.

Nablus was until recently the thriving commercial heart of the West Bank, but in the years following the second intifada, which started in 2000, the economy floundered under the weight of tough Israeli controls.
Many businesses were destroyed and the economy plummeted. Although things looked more optimistic with some economic growth in 2009, the realities are that the Israeli occupation continues to control the movement of people and goods, making real sustainable growth almost impossible.
Filmmaker Tom Evans and field producer Ghassan Khader spent a month following two manufacturing businesses in Nablus, an old soap factory and a modern olive oil company, and two import-export agents.
Against the backdrop of land confiscations for illegal Israeli settlements, they are struggling with ongoing conflicts with Israeli military presence in the area, and the frustrations of Israeli customs controls.

De Muur. Al zes jaar illegaal.
Het is al ruim al 6 jaar geleden. Toen, oordeelde het Internationaal Gerechtshof dat de muur die Israel bouwt illegaal is. Illegaal omdat Israël de muur grotendeels op Palestijns grondgebied bouwt. In de uitspraak heeft het Internationaal Gerechtshof bepaald dat de Internationale Gemeenschap (dus ook Nederland) erop moet toezien dat Israel de uitspraak naleeft. Maar de Nederlandse overheid doet niets en kijkt passief toe.
De muur staat er nog steeds en scheidt boeren van hun akkers, studenten van hun universiteiten en splijt families in tweeën. Palestijnen zijn niet meer vrij in hun eigen land. De muur staat een toekomstige Palestijnse staat en rechtvaardige vrede in de weg.

Sinds afgelopen woensdag de 28-jarige Samer Sarhan, een vader van vijf kinderen, werd doodgeschoten door een van de gewapende wachters die de Joodse kolonisten beschermen die wonen in de Arabische wijk Silwan van Jeruzalem, is het steeds onrustig geweest in Silwan en omgeving.

Verschillende mensen raakten gewond bij botsingen met de politie of door het gebruik van grote hoeveelheden traangas. In Issawiya, iets meer naar het noorden, stierf vrijdag een peuter van 14 maanden door een overmaat aan gas.
De wachter die Sarhan doodschoot werd eerst aangehouden door de politie, maar nog dezelfde dag op borgtocht weer vrijgelaten. Hij had de politie verteld dat hij met zijn jeep dor de wijk reed, uit moest stappen om de weg vrij te maken die versperd was, vervolgens door meerdere mensen met stenen bekogeld was en zijn vuurwapen had gebruikt omdat hij zich bedreigd voelde (het Israelische standaardverhaal in dit soort gevallen en de formule die alle daders lijkt vrij te pleiten) .
De Israelsche tv van kanaal 2 vertoonde echter zondag beelden van een bewakingscamera van het Palestijnse informatiecentrum van Silwan. Daarop is - hoewel de beelden erg onduidelijk zijn - in ieder geval te zien dat van versperren van de weg geen sprake was en ook al niet van een groep mensen die de wachter bedreigde. To mark the occasion, BDS activists in Gothenburg protested outside the local H&M flagship store. The protest theme was a satirical inauguration of the new apartheid store, with an inaugural speech, ribbon cutting ceremony, question competition, checkpoint, and flyers.
H&M is establishing itself in Apartheid Israel with plans to open 7 stores in 2010. H&M's investment contradicts the global boycott, divestment, sanctions (BDS) movement aiming to defeat Israeli apartheid. H&M turns a blind eye to the blatant discrimination of Palestinian citizens of Israel and to the ethnic cleansing and occupation being perpetrated not far from the new H&M stores.

France's 'justice' persecutes BDS.

On 29th October, representatives of CAPJPO Europpalestine, a French BDS group, are to appear in a French court in Paris, to answer charges that publishing the above video of a BDS action that took place in July 2009 at a Carrefour supermarket in Avry, constituted an "offense of incitement to discrimination, hatred or violence against a group of people on account of their belonging to the Israeli nation."
The plaintiff, the "National Bureau of vigilance against antisemitism (because, naturally, according to antisemites and fake "vigilantes against antisemitism" alike, to speak against Israel is to attack Jews for being Jewish), is looking for opportunities to promote repression of Palestine solidarity activism, and the French state is more than happy to oblige. Europalestine was chosen out either randomly or out of convenience. As a matter of fact, the action was sponsored by a long list of organizations, including a Jewish group (IJAN) and a national political party (the New Anti-Capitalist Party), both of which it would probably be counter-productive for the Zionists to attack in court.

British Palestinian rapper conducts a 'musical intifada'
"It's a musical intifada, a musical uprising," says Shadia Mansour squinting in the sunshine outside the hip hop workshop she is running in the West Bank city of Hebron.

From inside, a DJ can be heard cutting out beats on his decks.
Ms Mansour has been dubbed "the first lady of Arabic hip hop", but she is perhaps the only lady of Arabic hip hop.
The 24-year-old British Palestinian rapper grew up in South London, but she is currently on tour in the West Bank.
Ms Mansour is giving concerts in Bethlehem, Hebron and Ramallah but is also working with local young rappers in free flowing jam sessions.

Revolutionary music

"They're impressive," she says. "The first thing I noticed with the local hip hop artists is that their music is revolutionary - very similar to mine."
Ms Mansour says she first started singing at the age of five or six, often accompanying her parents at pro-Palestinian rallies in London as a child.

JAY: So what is this boycott about?
BARGHOUTI: The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel actually is one part of a general Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, or BDS for short. We started Academic and Cultural Boycott in 2004, and the general Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign was in 2005. The BDS campaign, from the very first moment, was endorsed by more than 170 of the main groups in Palestinian civil society, including the major trade unions, women's unions, political forces, NGOs, and so on and so forth. So this is a movement that has as close to a consensus as you can get, and it's not just among Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, Gaza, including East Jerusalem, but also Palestinians inside Israel, and the largest component of the Palestinian people, those in exile in the Diaspora.

Since the earliest days of the worldwide web, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has seen its rhetorical counterpart fought out on the talkboards and chatrooms of the internet.
Now two Israeli groups seeking to gain the upper hand in the online debate have launched a course in "Zionist editing" for Wikipedia, the online reference site.
Yesha Council, representing the Jewish settler movement, and the rightwing Israel Sheli (My I srael) movement, ran their first workshop this week in Jerusalem, teaching participants how to rewrite and revise some of the most hotly disputed pages of the online reference site.
"We don't want to change Wikipedia or turn it into a propaganda arm," says Naftali Bennett, director of the Yesha Council. "We just want to show the other side. People think that Israelis are mean, evil people who only want to hurt Arabs all day."
Wikipedia is one of the world's most popular websites, and its 16m entries are open for anyone to edit, rewrite or even erase. [RAMALLAH, 30 April 2010] - Today, DCI-Palestine is launching a short film which tells the story of Jameel, a 16-year-old boy from Tel Rumeida, Hebron. On 13 July 2009, Jameel was detained and beaten by soldiers near his home for no apparent reason, tied and blindfolded at a checkpoint nearby and allowed to be beaten by settlers and soldiers as well as have stones thrown at him, while his parents watched on nearby but were prevented from helping him.
Over the past two years, DCI-Palestine has documented 40 such incidents, in which Palestinian children were shot or physically assaulted, in an unprovoked manner, by settlers or soldiers. None of the victims who filed complaints with the Israeli authorities received notice of whether or not the complaint was followed up. This demonstrates the overall culture of impunity prevalent inside Israel with regards to crimes against Palestinian civilians. In 1953 leidde Ariel Sharon het bloedbad op de inwoners van Qibya en zorgde ervoor dat onze bondgenoten in 1982 rond de 2000 vluchtelingen konden afslachten in de vluchtelingenkampen van Sabra en Shatilla.

VIDEO - Haaretz daily reported Chaim Levinson, who covers settler activity, was assaulted by IDF soldiers Wednesday just outside the West Bank city of Jericho.

Levinson was covering the rightist march on the city and clashed with IDF soldiers, who tried to stop him from covering the event and grabbed his cell phone. The event was caught on tape by Channel 10 reporters.

According to Levinson, the incident took place after several settlers were able to make their way to a synagogue just north of Jericho. Levinson, along with the photographer Emil Salman and Channel 10 reporter Roee Sharon, spotted IDF reservists trying to detain several settlers.

The settlers resisted arrest, which prompted the three to begin filming the incident. The soldiers, they claimed, tried to force them to stop.

Salman told Ynet that the soldiers did not allow them to photograph the settlers being transferred into vehicles, even from a far, adding that when he climbed up a nearby hill, he was followed by a soldier who shoved

The razing of a Bedouin village by Israeli police shows how far the state will go to achieve its aim of Judaising the Negev region.

A menacing convoy of bulldozers was heading back to Be'er Sheva as I drove towards al-Arakib, a Bedouin village located not more than 10 minutes from the city. Once I entered the dirt road leading to the village I saw scores of vans with heavily armed policemen getting ready to leave. Their mission, it seems, had been accomplished.
The signs of destruction were immediately evident. I first noticed the chickens and geese running loose near a bulldozed house, and then saw another house and then another one, all of them in rubble. A few children were trying to find a shaded spot to hide from the scorching desert sun, while behind them a stream of black smoke rose from the burning hay. The sheep, goats and the cattle were nowhere to be seen – perhaps because the police had confiscated them.
Scores of Bedouin men were standing on a yellow hill, sharing their experiences from the early morning hours, while all around them uprooted olive trees lay on the ground. A whole village comprising between 40 and 45 houses had been completely razed in less than three hours.

Al-Baqa'a Valley.
Last week Israeli authorities removed irrigation pipes from Al Baqa'a Valley, and this week they also demolished a rain water cistern. ---
When international peace activists from Christian Peacemaker Teams arrived in the area at 9:30am, the large bagger that had been used to break up the concrete of the cistern was just leaving the site. The driver of a large tractor lifted scoops full of rocks and dumped them into the demolished cistern. Also, workers cut and disposed of irrigation pipes laid in two fields. Israeli border police demolished a rainwater cistern and removed irrigation pipes from several Palestinian fields in Al Beqa’a Valley just east of Hebron on July 14, 2010, the second day of incidents in the area this month.
The fields each measured 10 dunams (approximately 40 acres). One was a field of grape vines and the other field had tomatoes planted under grape vines. In addition to dismantling the irrigation pipes, the workers also cut the twines that were holding up tomato plants. At least seven families will be affected by this destruction, in total about 50 people.

Omer Goldman, has had to confront the values of her own family. She is the daughter of the former deputy head of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service and who is still considered one of the most powerful men in the Israeli security system. Omer, without her fathers permission visited a Palestinian town in the West Bank and at a check-point, alongside Palestinians, her supposed enemies, was fired upon by Israeli soldiers, We were sitting by the roadside talking and soldiers came along and after a few seconds they received an order and fired gas grenades and rubber bullets at us. Then it struck me, to my astonishment, that the soldiers were following an order without thinking. For the first time in my life, an Israeli soldier raised his weapon and fired at me.
Although, not surprisingly, her father does not support her decision to refuse, he still supports her as a daughter. He and I have very similar characters. I, too, fight to the end for what I believe in. But we are opposites ideologically.

Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussing their countries' foreign relations resembles two lovers discussing their future together. Though they have squabbled in the past over trivial things (things like settlement expansion that most other countries deem flagrant violations of international law), their July 6th meeting at the White House showed that their "unbreakable bond" cannot be shaken. Norman Finkelstein joins us in the studio to report that one should judge the alleged "peace process" with results, not rhetoric. Obama has certainly given enough lip service to settlement moratoriums, proximity talks, and direct talks, but what are the results? Since the Oslo Accords in 1993, there are three times as many settlers and Israel has annexed 42% of Palestinian land for even more expansion. Though Obama waxes eloquently about "direct negotiations," there are no signs of Israel withdrawing to the 1967 borders that would only begin to indicate a successful peace process. 9-7-2010

Osama Hamdan is the top representative of Hamas in Lebanon and is a member of the organization's politburo. Hamdan was born in the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian refugee family that fled the village of al-Batani al-Sharqi during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Hamdan worked at the Hamas office in Tehran as assistant to then Hamas representative Imad Alami from 1992-93. He became Hamas' official representative in Iran in 1994, serving in that post until 1998. In 1998, Hamdan was appointed as Hamas representative in Lebanon, a post he still holds. In 2004, he served as Hamas' spokesman in Cairo during a dialogue between Palestinian factions.

During the weekly protest yesterday in the West Bank village of Nabi Salih, two Israeli demonstrators were violently arrested by IDF soliders. These activists, Matan Cohen and Yonathan Shapria, were standing among a group of children and other Palestinian and Israeli demonstrators when the army made a brash decision to arrest them.
After the arrest, the IDF Spokesman’s unit tweeted, “2 arrested rioters in Nabi Salih who attacked an IDF soldier now in Israeli Police custody, the soldier is uninjured”
Max Blumenthal and I were in Nabi Salih documenting the demonstration. Max’s footage from the arrest shows that neither Matan or Yoanathan were behaving in a dangerous or violent way. The IDF commander in Nabi Salih made the arbitrary decision to arrest these two activists because they were asking why the IDF was firing tear gas at children and then mocked his “brave soldiers”. International pressure has been mounting on Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza since the deadly raid on an aid flotilla bound for the Palestinian territory.
The UN has said 80 per cent of people there depend on food hand-outs.
But Israeli officials insist that there is no humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
UN aid workers inside Gaza, however, see a different reality.
Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from Gaza, where it has been reported that about 14 per cent of children suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition.

USA. In Oakland, California an Israeli ship was blocked by protesters for the first time in history. 700-1000 protesters blocked three different gates at 5:30 A.M. keeping dockworkers from unloading the Israeli cargo.
ILWU members refused to cross picketline - citing "health & safety" provisions of their contract. Management demanded "instant arbitration." The arbitrator took a look at the picketlines at each gate to the SSA Terminal and ruled that ILWU members were justified in refusing to cross.
All dockworkers were sent home with FULL PAY.

The movement for Australian union action against Israel is gaining strength after the apartheid state’s latest murderous attack on the unarmed aid flotilla to Gaza.
The South Coast Labour Council (SCLC) and the New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory branches of the Australian Services Union have joined the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union in committing to the international boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against the aggressive Israeli state.
Australian unions and peak bodies have also called on members to attend the many protest actions.
The union campaign demanding an active boycott of Israel began in this country with the January 2009 ban on Israel cargo imposed by the Western Australian branch of the Maritime Union of Aust

This thing would have stopped a truck but the Fox News “fighters” on the Mavi Marmara were like ghosts. In fact, the “steel bar thugs” were exactly that, or more appropriately, cartoons.
They passed through walls, stood when others cowered and, like the cartoon characters they were, waved their steel bars in the air threateningly, all a fabrication of the IDF bungler squad, made for Likudist Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News. Like a scene out of the movie, Rising Sun with Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes, Israel is “busted” for clumsy attempts to insert scarry cartoon characters into videos counterfeited to support their Gaza blockade. Was this the same Israeli film group arrested on 9/11, the group who spent hours with cameras pointing at the World Trade Center waiting for the attack?

A day after a botched Israeli raid to stop the Gaza "Freedom Flotilla" from carrying some 700 activists and 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the besieged territory, details remain scant about the operation, in which at least nine activists were killed.
Several ships were towed into the port around noon on Monday. The largest passenger ship, the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara arrived about 6:45 p.m. Monday as the sun was setting on a day that saw at least nine of the approximately 600 activists on board killed in a skirmish with Israeli commandos.
Israel has also barred journalists from accessing the Ashdod port to which the ships, and their passengers, were towed -- and even the wounded were being treated at hospitals under heavy military guard.
Apache helicopter gunships buzzed noisily over the otherwise sleepy Israeli seaport of Ashdod, where dozens of local activists and foreign journalists had descended on the waterfront in anticipation of the seized fleet's arrival.

One of the most striking trends following the flotilla attack has been how quickly Israeli HASBARA is being exposed by internet journalists.The doctored IDF audio clips, where amateurs with mock Arab accents hiss ‘Go back to Aushwitz’ to Israeli naval officers.
Well they didn’t take long to pull apart did they? Then there are the (so-pathetic-they’re-almost-funny claims the flotilla was linked to Al- Qaeada. I laughed out loud to read in an Israeli paper that humanitarian activist (and former US marine) Ken O’Keefe was going to Gaza to; ‘train a commando unit in Hamas.’ I know Ken fairly well. Quite frankly I’m not sure who should be more insulted by this stupidity him or Hamas? On the night of Sunday, May 30, showing a terrifying disregard for human life, Israeli naval forces surrounded and boarded ships sailing to bring humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip. On the largest ship, the Mavi Marmara, Israeli commandos opened fire on civilian passengers, killing at least 9 passengers and wounding dozens more. Others are still missing. The final death toll is yet to be determined. Cultures of Resistance director Iara Lee was aboard the besieged ship and has since returned home safely.
Despite the Israeli government's thorough efforts to confiscate all footage taken during the attack, Iara Lee was able to retain some of her recordings. Above is raw footage from the moments leading up to and during the Israeli commandos' assault on the Mavi Marmara. 31-5-2010
