TWENTY-TWO HOURS IN SHEIKH JARRAH

Reageer (0)

18-1-2010
-January 14, 2010: a concert in Sheikh Jarrah featuring the politically-charged musical groups DAM and System Ali.

-January 15, 2010: the weekly demonstration against house evictions at the same location.

-The problem: only one permit for public gatherings was issued for the week.

-The result: mass arrests at the demonstration.

The Palestine Monitor offers a first-hand account of these two days. All photos were taken by Brady Ng.

It wouldn’t be a solidarity concert without a Palestinian flag floating in the air.

The weekly protest against house evictions in Sheikh Jarrah begins with a meeting at Mashbir Plaza in West Jerusalem, followed by a march to East Jerusalem. On January 15, however, eight police cars were waiting at the meeting point and broke up the crowd. Protestors and activists then had to cancel the march, and proceed to Sheikh Jarrah in small groups instead.

Preliminary reports suggest that up to seventeen protestors were arrested on January 15 in Sheikh Jarrah. Numerous others had their identification documents taken, and the police recorded their names and other personal information.
