the City of Marda Dec.8 Workshop Conversations about Peace and Self-Sufficiency Building the Fence |
Hope Blooms in Palestine The Marda Permaculture Farm is located in the small village of Marda in the Salfit District in the West Bank of the Palestinian Territories. It was founded in the fall of 2006 by permaculturist Murad Alkhufash, the “Palestinian with a Green Thumb.” Marda is a village of about 2,600 located just below the Israeli settlement of Ariel and the separation wall. The people of Marda, and the 23 surrounding villages have farmed the region for over one thousand years, and cared for the olive groves that surround the village, with their ancient old trees which, like the people themselves, become more beautiful and resilient over time. The goals of the project are to model and share ecologically-friendly, small-scale farming and healthy lifestyle practices for farmers, women, and agricultural students in the region, as well as providing outreach to students of permaculture from across the globe, who can take courses in permaculture while also learning first-hand about the rich Palestinian culture and historic farming practices. The Marda Permaculture has received support from a diverse number of organizations and individuals from across the globe, including Israel groups and individuals. The Farm operates under the umbrella of the Global Village Institute, a U.S. based nonprofit. It is a member of the UK Permaculture Association and the Global Ecovillage Network. Please consider a Holiday donation, from yourself or as a gift to a friend, which will go directly toward building the Center.

Kinda vision
------------------
Especially as Palestinian human, I found out, we are challenged to
change a system in crises which can not solve our issue. So i began to
think, how to be the change as Palestinian and which model can be
functioning in our entire complex environment, including our
geographical and political fragmentations. 18th century Politics of
partition and power execution over others. The question of Palestine
covers a large amount of issues in a corrupting environment, socially,
ecologically, and for sure politically. Politics of partition in a
world developing every day new patterns of commons.
So I began to think about a mechanism to heal our situation as
Palestinian using economy as vehicle of change. Why economy? Because
every one has or need a job. Palestinians helped building the
separation wall, because they need jobs. Thousands of Palestinians from
rural areas, especially from Jenin spend cold nights undergoing bad
consitions in Ramallah as cheep worker.
Livelihood is the main agenda of the majority of people here, not
resistance, not politics. The need for money replaced the need to
humans for each other and for their eco-system. But the meaning of what
we are doing at work can activate many hidden or buried values in
classical linear economy, which – the linear economy- put the awaken
human intelligence into a tiny box, the money box. We can not solve our
fundamental issues if we keep looked in such a box. And if we learned
to free our self from it, we will find the codes to dissolve other
boxes.
The Israeli occupation is only on pattern of a holistic occupation matrix goes deep into the reality we are creating.
So I have started developing a concept called " Holistic Healing Green Economy". http://www.facebook.com/l/
The basic idea is to integrate most of our eco-social empowering
involvement as NOGs, organic farming, local economist, .. into a bottom
up green "corporation/association". Economy, the free market, the web,
etc is used for building cooperation communities, empowering the
meta-individual, Greening Palestine, using the web and ICT to connect
into global green market and Palestinian collective intelligence, .. a
holistic healing economic body would emerge, if we manage to develop
the first seed-model, the first cell of such a body. Personally, I see
in Marda Permacutlrure Farm a great location to further develop to
become self-organizing through its open-space created originally by
founder Murad, who opened his site for the good of the human and the
nature, and to become self sustaining by further developing its
infrastructure, so that it may be becomes a model for the bigger vision
above.
