UPDATE.

Ambassador,
It does not come easy to a former ambassador to take the decision of sending an old shoe to a colleague. Decent people, however, are facing the disastrous combination of Israeli atrocities on a massive scale and ill conceived Netherlands policies condoning this criminal behaviour, thus obstructing peace. Sending my old shoe, ambassador, is a strong but peaceful expression of disdain and revulsion. In doing so now I join others to mark Nakba Day, the day commemorating the catastrophe Israel is inflicting on the Palestinian population for more that seventy yours.
International law, the supreme expression of civilization of the worldwide community, is my guiding principle. Israel violates many of its instruments daily and on a large scale. Out of a disturbingly long list, I take just one particularly telling example to illustrate my point.
Israel holds a large number of Palestinian (previously also Lebanese) men, women and children hostage in Israeli prisons. The numbers vary over time from more than 12.000 to more than 7,000. The vast majority is never accused of violating the law (or what Israel pretends to be the law), never prosecuted and never sentenced. Others are subjected to a so-called legal process. They are routinely tortured; yes, also the women and the children, some no more than 12 years of age. Relatives are obliged to provide food, often stolen by Israeli prison guards. After the illegal occupation of Palestine began in 1967, Israel incarcerated no less than 760,000 human beings. [de Volkskrant, 17th April 2010] This roughly equals the total population of The Hague.
Holding any number of civilians hostage for the purpose of trading them in for legally apprehended military personnel, is obviously not permissible under international law. Maltreating and torturing these defenceless hostages violate international Treaties, such as those against torture and protecting women and children. These important formal considerations aside, on a humane level these Israeli policies are plainly despicable.
As mentioned above, this is just one example out of many to illustrate the scope and depth of Israeli moral decline and of Palestinian suffering.
As international law is my guiding principle, I defend the existence and the future of the State of Israel, within these boundaries of course. Thus, this letter and this shoe also serve as a warning. Violating international law, the supreme expression of worldwide civilization, long term and on a massive scale comes at a price. The price is the self-inflicted moral, and in the end actual, destruction of Israel, well on their way now. My message to the Israeli government and to its multi-facetted population is: come to your senses, adopt international law and start to behave in a civilized manner. That is the one and only chance for a just and lasting peace for Israel and its neighbours.
I am almost equally offended and insulted by the policies of The Netherlands government, ruthlessly condoning virtually all Israeli aggression and atrocities, violating and ignoring international law and our Constitution along the way. The Quartet's guiding principles are: Israel will keep what it has already stolen from the Palestinians. The leftovers are subject to negotiation. The government of my home country should immediately withdraw from supporting this legal charade of monumental proportions. The just and decent thing to do for The Netherlands government, as well as Israel, is adopting the rulings of the International Court of Justice: Israel must withdraw from all - repeat all - occupied territories. Subsequently, final status negotiations on an equal level (meaning the State of Israel and the State of Palestine) will be conducted.
Instead of obstructing peace in The Middle East, a new and more responsible coalition government will, hopefully, open up balanced and meaningful Netherlands contributions to peace in the region. Ending a long and shameful period, this is a matter of the highest national urgency.
Finally, Israeli, Jewish and other friends warn me. Writing this letter may provoke physical, economic and/or psychological aggression against myself or even my family, many say. The fate of Mr Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai on January 19th 2010 is a disturbing illustration of their concerns. Right or wrong, it seems prudent to take note.

Mr. M.J.M. Verhagen, Minister of Foreign Affairs
attachment Key to peace in the Middle East, October 2008
The Hague, 2nd June 2010
Your Excellency,
Thank you for sending your most interesting letter. Allow me, please, to make three opening observations.
First, this letter and the one of 14th May are, of course, not directed to Mr. Kney - Tal. They are, instead, sent to the official representative of the State of Israel in The Netherlands. Your letter is interesting as it reflects perfectly well the internal problems Israel is embroiled in.
Second, contrary to your assumption, my leading principles are derived from existing international law, the supreme expression of the civilized community of sovereign states. Thus, I defend the existence of Israel within the boundaries of international law. I have, however, no patience whatsoever with Israeli 'morals' and Israeli 'historic narratives'. What counts is the Israeli aggression on the ground and at the high seas, as well as the violation of an impressive list of instruments of international law daily and on a large scale.
Third, your assumption of 'Israel's predicament in a hostile neighbourhood' could not better be explained than by the imprisonment and torture of some 460.000 innocent Palestinian and Lebanese men, women and children (some of them sexually abused i ), the illegal settlements policies on Palestinian land, the illegal siege of Gaza and the equally illegal assault by the IDF ii in international waters on an unarmed passenger vessel under Turkish flag, murdering and injuring innocent civilians on a humanitarian mission on 31st May 2010.
Small wonder that Israel and the Israelis live in a hostile neighbourhood.
Your letter is composed of two different elements. One part consists of worn out, standard, 'cut-and-paste', Hasbara iii nonsense. It has no relevance for countering my argumentation and should be ignored.
The other part is of interest. Sending a wooden shoe would probably serve to express typical Dutch disdain and revulsion. This, however, would involve too narrow a view of the world we live in. If you were to suggest that sending a shoe was similar to 'a form of protest common in the Middle East', you are absolutely right. Israel will, of course, understand as it is a country solidly embedded geographically, culturally, economically, politically and militarily in the Middle East. If present Israeli policies continue, your country is in real danger of imploding. Similar to the shoe incident in Baghdad, my initiative serves as a wake-up call for the Israeli leadership.
Hasbara is not my typical example of reliability and trustworthiness, its 'narrative' more often than not deeply flawed. However, the classical expression truth will out is at work, and the Israeli leadership is most helpful. Every single stupidity - the illegal wall on Palestinian soil, the illegal summer war of 2006 against the Lebanon, the illegal and murderous winter of 2008/2009 attack on the Gaza civilian population, the recent piracy in international waters, the imprison and torture hundreds of thousands innocent civilians - exposes the true nature of the Israeli regime. I am convinced that future stupidities - mass deportations of Palestinians, the further expansion of illegal settlements, the continued illegal expansion of Israeli domination of East Jerusalem, the continued stranglehold on Gaza, attacks on the third holy shrine of the Muslim world in East Jerusalem, renewed wars against the Lebanon and Gaza, a war against Iran - will clarify the picture further.
Way back, in 1948, Albert Einstein and 27 other American Jewish leaders already exposed Herut (from which both Likud and Kadima originate) as 'a political party closely akin in its organisation, method, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties.' iv Eretz-Israel, serving as the national ideology, is a telling illustration and a tragic mistake. The concept of a 'Jewish' state is picture perfect. Delete Jewish, insert Aryan v, and you will understand.
The habitual loudmouth Israeli political culture obscures the fact that this tiny, vulnerable and not particularly important country's very survival depends on continued political, economic and financial support by the two superpowers in decay, the USA and the EU. Constant aggression, (semi-?)permanent oppression of an entire population and many other atrocities have rendered Western world support dangerously wafer-thin. Some additional stupidities may create the critical mass of anger and frustration which could make political support for Israel vanish, perhaps even overnight. Iran, India, Brazil and China are the emerging superpowers. They will decide on how to deal with isolated Israel in their own interest and on their own terms.
The media repeat an alleged Israeli doctrine these days. However, Israel does what it takes, the world says what it wants may prove to be a lethal misconception.
I cannot but accept that you personally are dismayed at my unusual initiative. Nonetheless, I hope that you will understand my concerns for the future of Israel, do appreciate my positive intentions as well as my expression of despair. My aim is to modestly contribute in assisting the Israeli leadership to wake up, to shape up and to, finally, join the community of civilized states.
But all said and done, I do not tolerate the Israeli regime putting into jeopardy a peaceful future for my children and my grandchildren.
A just and lasting peace, solidly based on international law, is the first and foremost prerequisite for Israel to survive.
With best personal regards,
yours sincerely,
Jan J. Wijenberg

Onderwerp: Nakba Oude Schoenen?
Hoogachtend,
Sonja van den Ende
