Recently, Members of Congress have introduced a rash of resolutions--threatening to cut of funds to UNRWA, praising Israel's Apartheid Wall, deeming it a 'shining model of democratic values,' and justifying its illegal occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem--that
show just how out of touch most of them are when it comes to
understanding the requirements for a just and lasting
Israeli-Palestinian peace. |
But one resolution, H.Con.Res.270, introduced last week by Rep. Barbara Lee, takes a different tack by calling for accountability and a U.S. investigation into Israel's shooting of U.S. citizen Tristan Anderson on March 13, 2009.
On that day, the Israeli military shot Tristan in the forehead
with a high-velocity tear gas canister during an unarmed protest
against Israel's Apartheid Wall in the West Bank village of Ni'lin.
The shooting resulted in Tristan sustaining brain damage; he remains
today in an Israeli hospital.
As we reported on our blog
in February after the Israeli Ministry of Justice declined to file any
indictments in Tristan's case, in FY2007 alone the United States
provided Israel with 121,991 pieces of teargas and riot control agents valued at $1,654,536.
It's very likely that U.S. taxpayers financed, as part of an annual
U.S. military aid appropriation, the very weapons that Israel used to
critically injure U.S. citizen Tristan Anderson, as well as to injure
and kill thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians over the past
decade.
As H.Con.Res.270 states, the United States and Israel must "ensure that any incident of this kind never occurs again". Here's how you can take action to help make that a reality.
